Jet Lag Hacks Blog

"Travel and change of place impart new vigor to the mind and body, as Ayurveda teaches us the importance of balance and harmony in every journey." ~ Unknown

We all know this term and can love & hate it. We love it because it’s means we got to travel. We hate it because well… we have to adjust. And it’s not always so easy. I personally got hit very hard with my jet lag in my return from India. Not only is it literally around the world but a 12.5 hour difference! Also, there was a 60 degree Fahrenheit temperature change. And as a woman, I ended up on my monthly flow. So I kept close to several Ayurvedic hacks to get myself back on track!

  1. Before even embarking on my travels, I gave myself a sesame oil self massage.

  2. Once I got to my destination, I made sure I got outside and stood in the sun for about 15-20 minutes to help recalibrate my circadian rhythm.

  3. I immediately attempted to shift my meals times and bedtime to my local time. Yes that means I ate light meals when not hungry (or just broth) and woke up on time despite feeling tired.

  4. I avoiding drying foods like salad and chips and opted for more warm oily foods. I added ghee to all my foods and have been drinking warm milk. If you don’t do dairy, almond milk is next best choice.

  5. I took Triphala in small amounts at bedtime for three days. This helps regular the bowels and keep constipation at bay – bowel disregulation will only amplify jet lag. Triphala can be drying so please only take for a short time unless advised by an Ayurvedic Practitioner or Vaidya.
