What is an Embodied Nervous System

When our Vata nature can be pulled out of whack, it is not abnormal to experience fear, worry, overwhelm and self doubt. The surface level Ayurveda answer is to do practices such as meditation, get into nature and eat more grounding foods like sweet potatoes, beets, carrots and squashes.

However, how to shift the mindset? How to go from fight or freeze to standing tall and embodying trust? How do we know that we can relax into knowing we can respond versus react?

Trust that you have your own back. Know that you trust yourself to steer the ship. Know that a piece of the divine lives deep inside you – known in the Vedic texts as “Jiva Atman.”

Atman is the Sanskrit word for the true Self, the innermost essence of a person. In Vedantic and Ayurvedic philosophy, it is considered eternal, unchanging, and pure consciousness, distinct from the body, mind, and personality. It is the witness that stays constant while everything else changes.

Jiva means the individual living being, the embodied soul. It refers to Atman as it exists within a particular body and mind, carrying the experiences, tendencies, and karma of that life. The Jiva is the one who experiences hunger, joy, illness, and healing.

How to practically apply this? Choose the answer that comes from your center. Not the one that suits the ego or reacts in anger, judgement or indifference. The answer that makes your heart sing in the shower and the one you yelp out loud when you consistently pracice detachment from the outcome. And then you chose the answer that serves for you – one that helps you learn and adapt. Not one that is fixed in nature or that is to prove a point. One that you would chose no matter the outcome.

Know that when you allow your true nature to shine through, that you will always be making the best decision for yourself in real time.
